Educational Workshops:
Sunday, January 18th, 2009
Location: Beckman Center of the National Academy of Sciences, Irvine, CA

Workshop 1: What Geneticists need to know about Brain Imaging
Huntington room, 2:00-5:00 pm
The workshop will be led by Dr. Fabio Macciardi. Dr. Macciardi is both a psychiatrist and statistical geneticist, and has many years’ experience in interdisciplinary research with investigators in other biomedical disciplines. He has basic tutorials available to explain concepts such as Mendelian disorders, complex traits, quantitative trait loci methods, linkage disequilibrium issues, etc. The goal for this workshop is for experienced researchers in functional neuroimaging studies to gain familiarity with the terminology and methods of genetic analyses.

Workshop 2: What Brain Imagers need to know about Genetics
Board room, 2:00-5:00 pm
The workshop will be led by Dr. Jessica Turner and Dr. Paul Rodriguez. Drs. Turner and Rodriguez are active neuroimaging researchers and have experience presenting MRI methods and analyses to both non-imaging audiences as well as imaging experts. The workshop will be a three-hour presentation of the basics of MRI, covering what kinds of information can be obtained from it, and the basics of functional MRI experimental design and analyses. The goal is for experienced researchers in genetics and related fields to have some familiarity with the jargon and methods of functional and structural imaging studies.
